There is a solitude that only nature can provide, its an awareness of existing within the universe. Forever imprinted on my mind are desert wilderness skies silhouetted against the edges of a jagged land or a glassy sea. My latest pieces are influenced by the sights and sounds of the desert and the sea. These memories have strongly influenced my work as I re-imagine the wide open panorama of the desert.
Encased in this series of cast resin cubes are desert vistas, and the many layers of the atmosphere and oceans.
As light charges the phosphorescent layers, that light is released over time and the darker the room environment is, the stronger the "excited" light is emitted from the pieces. Light illuminates a mysterious "other world" where mountains meet seas in one layer, and clouds in another, its much like a desert setting, but more about a vision of a new world..
There are stages in my work where my "work" evolves, sometimes moving away from the piece for a period of time allows additional thoughts and clarification of my intent. In the beginning of creating a new work, I may see a pattern to pursue. It may be an idea that I am pursuing but a sudden twist, an accidental incident in the work reveals a different vision and direction to take. I am influenced much by what I read and look back at memories with a fresh perspective. Stores of restoration, faith, healing, promises and more resonate in my work, as does nature itself.
There are 5 cubes in the first of this series-each one so different yet the same. My thought was to create a column within the cast and within the piece, the casts which captures the flight experience from Egypt depicted in Exodus 13:20-22. "And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.
A new suite of cast resin cubes that are much larger and are more like columns. 3" x 3" x 11" and I begin by casting resin into the live edge of alligator juniper wood. " Fire and Clouds" is the working title for the new works. A column of clouds and fire are seen by everyone in the wilderness both day and night. I asked David Paul to give me his interpretation. "The wood provides a unique and at the same time revealing foundation for the resin layers. As I observe the piece, there seems to be a kind of upward progression originating from the wood foundation, as though dark elements from the earth are making their way to the surface. In this process, a purification seems to take place, and opaque gives way to translucent and almost transparent as earth becomes sky. Like all of nature, its individual elements are each unique and separate, yet connected at the same time. There could be no earth without sky, nor sky without earth.
$150. Series of 8.
Several themes in my life are continued in my work. The theme of restoration shows up as I am drawn to wood shards that are weathered beaten, twisted and termite infested. The restoration process allow me to deepen my faith walk as I restore what once considered useless and to be discarded. God restores the useless and the discarded and can do much with this chaff.
Healing is another theme that is incorporated in my work. In each piece of work, I embed healing dirt from mission Chimayo in Taos, NM. I am a believer in healing and rely solely on the power of God to heal. None the less, cannot dismiss the myths and ritual that is derived from this place.
