Slide Show showing work in my studio the summer of 2015. "In the Cloud".
"in the Cloud"
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. So goes the story of portrayed in Exodus 3:1
31"x10"x6" The Burning Bush continues this summers studio work. This large mixed media work is created using Wood-Resin-Steel & Light. External light is a new direction that I am taking and I am using very small LED lights. The lights can be bent or shaped in any manner.
God... is in "In the Cloud" so records Moses, the author of the book of Exodus. Light... is" in the Cloud"...Life is "in the Cloud"... Knowledge is "In the Cloud" Healing-Faith-Hope and Love. Everything of God gets expressed "in the Cloud"
I visualize the suspended wood shard as a cloud suspended above a moon lit "desert evening. Night light reflects a distant desert ocean and the mirage we follow: a Cloud during the day and a Pillar of Fire at night. Cast in layers of translucent resins mixed with phosphorescent and pearlescent powders. Clear cast resin layers allows back lighting to permeate the multi layers. Stteel rods finished with slate black patina, anchor the piece to a wooden base of white oak, a blue sea and red earth desert is cast atop the white oak base, a familiar landscape for me: surfing, fishing, exploring Baja. Nights in the deserts of Baja are magical and spiritual.

Wooden triangle cast with translucent layers of phosphorescent and pearlescent resin casts. The wood is an unknown hardwood used as railroad ties. Slate black patina steel rods disappear in the dark of the night and the luminescent triangle hovers, seemingly unconnected to the base. Earth-Air-Sky-Fire elements are combined that creates a spiritual context-a light house to help us focus inward, and reminded of how God was present in the cloud in Exodus 13:21.
The Christ in the piece: His arms extended over the world and within him dwells all the power and glory, and He is the light of the world. Following light provides great peace.
Close up of the resin cast wooden shard...God is in the Cloud- Red phosphorescent powders, mixed with blue and aqua casts provides a veiled representation of God. I wrapped the steel rods with copper wire LED light string creating the pillar of fire. Exploring external light as well as an internal light at the same time realizing I create my pieces to be viewed both during natural daylight and the mysterious night light. Light is in the Clouds.
"God is on the Mountain" 28" x 15" x 7" Mixed Media: Wood-Resin-Steel-Light
"What is it about mountains and the spiritual life? Mount Sinai, Mount Olympus, Mount Fuji, Machu Picchu, Mount Athos, and the list goes on and on. Why is it that God seems to appear so dramatically on the tops of mountains, again and again? So goes the sermon by Dean Scotty McLennan
This piece was inspired by the story in Exodus 13:22 ; And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light...it never left the people. I have been blessed having lived and visited remote wilderness areas, whether fishing, diving, surfing, in those moments God has declared His glory in His creation.
Transluscent resin is cast with pearlescent and phosphorescent powders. Light is emitted from the triangular cloud, a metaphor for the trinity, the triune nature of God. I used a palette of phosphorescent colors:sea blue, crimson red, emerald green and seafoam white layering. Another spiritual mountain so far away yet so close. Steel pillars with a blue/black patina, hold the cloud up and by night, the poles disappear and LED lights simulate pillars of fire. The steel columns are wrapped with silver wire LED lights. The base is an unknown hardwood that had a life as a railroad tie in the mid 19th century and now supports an image of an invisible God.
