My recent work focuses on the interaction of dark and light. The “Beneath the Darkness” series of mixed media work uses my favorite medias; cast resins, recycled wood, steel and light. I am working and experimenting with LED light sources. When light streams through layers of translucent and phosphorescent resins cast, it "charges" the phosphorescent layers. Any light will charge my pieces but sunlight and UV light accelerates the process. In this series I am using Alligator Juniper, Eucalyptus and Black Walnut.
Healing and restoration are a deep part of my meditation and musings. Spiritual themes are in my work and the use of mixed media allows me to create a story that is deeper than the physical appearance of the work. Soil from Mission Chimayo is added to each piece. Such a spiritual place in Taos, New Mexico.
In each piece a hidden soul enters the darkness bringing in its own light and presence in a dreamlike realm.
"Approaching the Abyss" 18" x 12" x 14" Eucalyptus base.
Working on new sculpture pedestal tops using a unique plaster process to sculpt shapes into the work. These are 18" square tops and after my painting technique, which includes phosphorescent layers, I cover in a 1/2" of clear resin to coat the pieces. The steel column is 40" tall.
There is a solitude that only nature can provide, its an awareness of existing within the universe. Forever imprinted on my mind are desert wilderness skies silhouetted against the edges of a jagged land or a glassy sea. My latest pieces are influenced by the sights and sounds of the desert and the sea. These memories have strongly influenced my work as I re-imagine the wide open panorama of the desert. Encased in this series of cast resin cubes are desert vistas, and the many layers of the atmosphere and oceans. As light charges the phosphorescent layers, that light is released over time and the darker the room environment is, the stronger the "excited" light is emitted from the pieces. Light illuminates a mysterious "other world" where mountains meet seas in one layer, and clouds in another, its much like a desert setting, but more about a vision of a new world..
There are stages in my work where my "work" evolves, sometimes moving away from the piece for a period of time allows additional thoughts and clarification of my intent. In the beginning of creating a new work, I may see a pattern to pursue. It may be an idea that I am pursuing but a sudden twist, an accidental incident in the work reveals a different vision and direction to take. I am influenced much by what I read and look back at memories with a fresh perspective. Stores of restoration, faith, healing, promises and more resonate in my work, as does nature itself.
My thought was to recreate a column using 3" steel and cast resin layers. Exodus 13:20-22. "And the Lord went before themby day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and bynight in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. An "angel" like form is above the yellow/orange translucent casts.
People are like stained - glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
Mixed media Steel-Resin-LED & UV lighting effects. Patina on the steel shows a black and rust color and is coated with a high gloss lacquer finish. 11" 19" x 3" $375 each. 2 to this series.
Latest platforms are created to be the pedestal tops. 15"x15"x3" on top of a 40" steel column with 12" 1/4 steel base. Considering selling the pedestals as I also consider them to be part of my art. Some ask "Are you a product designer or are you an artist"? I am both. Using concealed LED lighting. Works well with a 8" x 8" Eucalyptus base because it lights up the wood.
