The thought of freedom provides the context and theme for a new series titled "Exodus". Through this series, I re-imagine flying from within my dreams; I feel like I am in control and can effortlessly hover over the desert floor aided by an updraft of desert air. The cast resin pieces are a lens diffusing light through the translucent layers showing color captured from the surrounding area. In the dark, the pieces emit an eerie light, a light that has a special drawing power to the viewer.

I love this quote-it dispenses with the notion of privilege. I struggle at times understanding and creating my art. I am at times very clear in the direction I take and at other times really experimenting. How do create images of the invisible? Can they be mirages? Or dreams? Or are they hallucinations? I have pondered this conundrum for some time now and somehow my artwork answers that question with memories of wilderness experiences. There is something about being absolutely alone under a big sky or vast ocean. My latest work is much larger in scale. I use colored translucent layers of resin mixed with pearlescent & phosphorescent powders and cast onto the "live edge" of native Arizona woods. I have always consider myself a landscape painter and now entering a new phase as a sculptor. The "landscapes" created in my work are memories and images perhaps even mirages of undiscovered realms in the desert and along the shores of oceans. LED lighting illuminates the translucent layers of resin.
“I had to clear up my messy life. By letting go of the debris and filth, I have come to a deeper, more soulful beauty and clarity like an oasis in the desert. From that place of clarity, a vision of what I could have, what I could do, who I could be has emerged if I allow my heart to become a place of compassion, acceptance and forgiveness.” Sharon E. Rainey
Exodus is about the flight to the promised land. Sometimes a short flight and other times it takes 40 years for a 11 day journey. We are on a spiritual journey and at times traveling without maps, relying on the stars in the sky, contemporary thought and our own skills.
I titled this suite of work "Exodus" seeing how this creature from the air transcends walls while soaring on its journey...a journey to freedom. Unlike the journey of the Israelites, having wings provides a longer view, a greater perspective of the vast desert. But a guide was provided so wandering aimlessly was limited relying more on their faith and instructions to follow a column of fire at night and a column of clouds during the day. .
