“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars.” ― Og Mandino
I test my work by studying the pieces in a dark room or in my studio at night. I look for luminosity and character in the dark, the forms reflect and absorb light and if they retain strong luminosity, I am pleased with the work. My ideas are influenced by my world view.
Psalm 8 I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous, your handmade sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted in their settings. Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way? Let me dwell in a land of tranquility seeking your dream for my life.

Light has invisible qualities- I think of light as a healing agent, I know light affects mood as well. My color palette is Blue, Aqua, Violet, Green, White, Orange and Red. Phosphorescence is a specific type of photoluminescence related to fluorescence. Unlike fluorescence, a phosphorescent material does not immediately re-emit the radiation it absorbs. The slower time scales of the re-emission are associated with “forbidden” energy state transitions in quantum mechanics. As these transitions occur very slowly in certain materials, absorbed radiation may be re-emitted at a lower intensity for up to several hours after the original excitation. I use phosphorescent layering in my work and that light is best seen in a dark setting. I have early childhood memories practicing religious disciplines such as lighting a vigil candle. In a way, charging the pieces with a UV flash light in the dark reminds me of lighting a candle in church and then meditating on the light it emitted. The phosphorescent light in my work provides a strong luminescence but over time gently fades into the darkness over time. The light can last all night. Any light charges the pieces but UV accelerates the process.
